The Hong Kong Subway, known as the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) in Hong Kong, operates a comprehensive transportation system which includes 10 lines covering most parts of Hong Kong. MTR provides an extensive transportation network for commuters which is also a key contributor to Hong Kong’s fast growing economy and operation efficiency. The company is known for its high levels of customer satisfaction and has contributed its expertise in railway operations and management to the Elizabeth Line development in the UK.
During the 1960s, the Hong Kong government realized a need to accommodate increasing road traffics as Hong Kong’s economy grew rapidly. In 1966, Freeman, Fox, Wilbur Smith & Associates, transport consultants from UK, were appointed to study the transport system of Hong Kong. On 1 September 1967, the consultants submitted the Hong Kong Mass Transport Study to the government, which recommended the construction of a 40-mile (64 km) rapid transit railway system in Hong Kong. After many debates in the Legislative Council, in 1972, the Hong Kong government authorised construction of the initial 12 miles (20-kilometre) system.
Soon after the opening of the first line in 1979, the MTR immediately became popular in Hong Kong. As a result, subsequent lines were built to cover more territories.
In 1980, the second phase of the MTR was launched, which expanded the system to include several more lines and stations. This phase also saw the construction of the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, which allowed trains to run between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.
Over the years, the MTR has undergone several expansions and upgrades, including the addition of new lines, stations, and technologies such as the use of driverless trainsIt is widely regarded as one of the best metro systems in the world in terms of efficiency, reliability, and safety.
To date, the MTR consists of heavy rail, light rail, and feeder bus service centred on a 10-line rapid transit network serving the urbanised areas of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. The system included 240.6 km (149.5 mi) of rail as of 2022 with 167 stations, including 99 heavy rail stations, 68 light rail stops and one high-speed rail terminus.
Furthermore, the MTR Corporation played a significant role in building, one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the UK, the Elizabeth Line.
The MTR Corporation has been involved in the project as a partner in the Crossrail consortium, which was responsible for designing, constructing, and operating the railway line. The MTR Corporation has contributed its expertise in railway operations and management to the project, as well as its experience in constructing and operating complex urban railway systems.

The British made a great contribution to Hong Kong’s transportation by developing the railway and road transport system. Beginning in the late 19th century, the British government laid down a network of main roads across the territory, which greatly facilitated the spread of settlement and commerce. Railways have been an important part of Hong Kong’s transportation infrastructure for many decades and are still one of the most efficient and well-developed railway systems in the world. Today, Hong Kong has a well-developed road system that is well-designed and well-maintained, making it one of the most reliable and efficient transportation networks in Asia.
